Cliffside Chap was created to capture the puffin’s instantly recognisable personality — bold markings, bright beak and a slightly comical stance. I built the original coloured-pencil drawing with fine layers of feather detail and flashes of orange through the beak and feet. The result is a cheerful coastal character with plenty of presence, inspired by one of Britain’s most distinctive seabirds.

The story behind the Puffin

Puffins are full of character, with their bold markings, bright beaks and slightly comical stance. Cliffside Chap was created to capture that unmistakable personality while keeping the focus on the bird itself.

I built the piece in coloured pencil, layering fine marks and colour to bring out the soft feather detail, rich dark markings and flashes of orange in the beak and feet. The result is a cheerful coastal character with plenty of presence, inspired by one of Britain’s most recognisable seabirds.
